What is a handmade lampshade?

A handmade lampshade is one that is made by hand and not mass-produced in a factory. This is a creation of the highest quality, made by skilled artisans.

Handmade lampshades can be custom made for all types of lamps: for floor lamps and pendant lamps. They can also be made in a wide variety of styles, from modern to traditional, to suit any type of decor.

Additionally, handmade lampshades are of a higher quality than mass-produced ones, as each piece is crafted with care and attention to detail. The materials are carefully selected for their quality, texture and color, and the hand finishing guarantees a very high-end result.

We have a wide range of lampshades in our workshop that we manufacture to order for decorators and architects as well as for individuals.

The main advantage is that such a lampshade can be tailor-made according to your specific needs. You can choose the color, size, shape and material that best suits your room and decor.

Who makes custom lampshades?

The first lampshades were made by hand several centuries ago, back when people lit with candles. Over time, lampshades became more and more sophisticated, using materials such as glass, metal and fabric. Manufacturing techniques have also improved, with the use of machines to cut and assemble parts.

However, even with the introduction of industrial production, many lampshades are still made by hand today. Artisans often use traditional techniques, sewing and gluing the pieces to create unique, personalized designs.

Today, some lampshades are still works of haute couture, created with passion and know-how.

Pig Bladder Lampshade Manufacturer

Pig bladder lampshades were very popular in the 1950s, but have since fallen out of fashion. However, there are still a few rare fans of this material who praise its incomparable luminous effect. Mounting systems called "rail system" or "reflector" were often used with these lampshades on old floor lamps. Nowadays, pig bladder lampshades have become very rare.

How to make a lampshade yourself?

Do you like to create things with your own hands? So try creating a lampshade yourself! You can take inspiration from any style that suits your interior. A good idea is to create a Pinterest board where you add your favorite designs and choose a prototype for yourself.

Here we explain how to make a lampshade in the style of the famous abstractionist artist Jackson Pollock. This idea is taken from the YouTube channel Aubijoux la Soie.

You will need:

  • White adhesive polyphane;
  • From pongee 9 or 10 to the meter;
  • A carcass;
  • Scissors;
  • Sticky tape;
  • Tube setting;
  • Notched frame.

Here are the different steps:

  1. Measure the length and width of your polyphane.
  2. Cut your silk (pongee 10) into a rectangle, counting an edge 1 or 2 cm longer.
  3. Fix your silk on a notched frame using pins provided for this purpose.
  4. Make your pattern with the setting. Here, we wanted to create an abstract pattern, nothing prevents you from creating other patterns/designs.
  5. Then let your creation dry, then iron it with an iron to fix the color.
  6. Glue your silk to the polyphane. To do this, remove the protective film little by little and carefully apply the silk, taking care not to create creases.
  7. Glue a width of your polyphane rectangle using the adhesive tape, then wrap the end around the metal carcass.
  8. Create a nice edge on the other width, then put glue on the 2 lengths.
  9. Wrap your carcass on the polyphane.
  10. Fold all the silk edges towards the inside of the polyphane.
